Located in Montreal’s Place des Arts complex, and part of the Quartier des Spectacles entertainment district, the Montreal Contemporary Art Museum (MAC) is an art museum dedicated to showcasing contemporary artworks created in the second half of the 20th century to the present day. The museum was founded by the Quebec provincial government in 1964 and was the first art museum solely dedicated to contemporary art in Canada.
The MAC is roughly divided into two areas, with four rooms dedicated to displaying works of its permanent collection, and the rest of the museum’s space set aside for the museum’s seasonal exhibits. The MAC’s permanent collection features the work of over 1,500 artists, and over 7,000 separate sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs, and video artworks
With a particular penchant for Quebecois and Canadian artists.
