In 1754, 8 students gathered for their first day of class at what would one day become Columbia University. That institution was called King’s college. It remained King’s College until the American Revolution, when the school was forced to close. When it reopened eight years later, it was under the name Columbia College. It took another hundred years for it to be called Columbia University.
Today, Columbia is one of the top universities in the world. Students from across the globe compete for admission to Columbia’s Law School, Medical School, and Journalism School. And of course there are other draws. Columbia is home to an internationally renowned physics department that supported groundbreaking research into the atom in the 1940s. Today, researchers are at the forefront of medicine, with exciting work coming out of the Audubon biotechnology research park. Whatever subject you’re passionate about, you can be sure Columbia is making great strides in the field.
Why charter a bus to visit Columbia University
When traveling with a student group, it’s best to keep everyone together. This fosters camaraderie as you step into the hustle and bustle of New York life. It’s also cheaper than paying for enough cabs to transport all your friends and their luggage. A coach bus can meet you at the airport, drop off your bags at the hotel, and whisk you away on your very own customized college tour. You can even take advantage of the coach bus’s wifi for a study session on the go.
Columbia’s Morning Heights campus is wedged between three neighborhoods: the Upper West Side, Harlem, and a smaller neighborhood that runs along the Hudson River called Morning Heights. The campus was built to resemble an Athenian Agora and feels like a neighborhood of its own, but don’t fall into the trap of getting too cozy on campus and never leaving. Harlem is just steps away and it’s packed with cultural attractions to get lost in. Harlem was home to such icons as Bessie Smith, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and Josephine Baker. Monuments to their great works of art, music, and literature are on every corner. While in Harlem, be sure to visit the Apollo Theater, the Studio Museum, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
