About Fort York

Fort York (also known as Old Fort York) is a set of historic fortifications in the Fort York neighborhood of Downtown Toronto that was instrumental in keeping the city secure in the early 18th and 19th centuries.    The fort was originally established in the closing years of the 18th century to defend the city and its crucial natural harbor.  During the war of 1812, the garrison was overrun and the fortress razed to the ground in the disastrous battle of York, but the fort was quickly rebuilt and succeeded in repelling another invasion attempt the following year.   Although the site’s future has been threatened by repeated Toronto infrastructure projects, public outcry has guaranteed its protection at every turn.    The present-day site of Fort York features a collection of garrison buildings built immediately after the battle of York, including original blockhouses, powder magazines, officer quarters, and barracks, as well as numerous artillery emplacements. During the summer, historical interpretation groups demonstrate traditional regimental music, musketry drills, period cooking, and even ceremonial firings of a number of the artillery pieces on site.
