The University of Texas (at Austin) officially opened in September 1883. The Austin campus is the flagship school within the University of Texas system, and even though the school originally opened in 1883, it was only written into the legislature in 1876 as part of the Texas Constitution. There are more than 51,000 students enrolled today— compared to 221 in 1883. Students attending the University of Texas at Austin have an extensive class selection, with more than 12,000 courses offered across nearly 400 undergrad and grad programs. The school also features a campus that spans more than 400 acres, and its mascot is both a live Texas longhorn named Bevo, as well as a costumed one called Hook’em.

Austin Community College has been serving students since its inception in 1973. It offers associate degrees and technical/career certificates. These days, more than 70,000 students attend the school in over different 100 programs and spread across 11 campuses. The school also offers dual credit programs, continuing education classes, and ESL coursework. Austin Community College currently offers two bachelor’s degree programs: one in nursing and one in Computer Information Technology. The school’s mascot is the riverbat, and the school motto is: “Start here. Get there.”

Southwestern University sits on an impressive 700-acre campus in Georgetown, Texas. Founded by Methodists in 1840, the school claims many firsts; as both the state’s first higher education institution and host of its first homecoming. Additionally, three of the first five Rhodes Scholars in Texas graduated from Southwestern. Although boasting these impressive credentials, the school has remained a relatively small and intimate community. Currently, there are just over 1500 students attending the school, most of whom live on campus. The school’s mascot is the pirate.

Texas State University was founded in 1899 as Southwest Texas State Normal School (for teachers), but its name has changed many times throughout its history, its most recent change occurring in 2013. Presently, there are nearly 40,000 students who attend the school and participate in over 200 programs across its expansive 492-acre campus. The school has the largest forensics research facility in the world (The Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State), and it is the only university in Texas to have graduated a future US President (Lyndon B. Johnson). The school’s mascot is Bobo, the Bobcat.

The Art Institute of Austin is a small institution with just under 400 undergrad students. The school is a branch campus of The Art Institute of Houston. All told, there are roughly 15 campuses of The Art Institutes, a for-profit college organization which at one point boasted over 50 campuses across the US. The Art Institute of Austin offers programs in diverse fields, from gaming & technology to culinary studies and marketing. They offer scholarships and financial aid to those who qualify. The Austin location may be relocating to the city of Bastrop, Texas in the near future.

St. Edward’s University was founded by Rev. Edward Sorin, CSC, in 1877. Fr. Sorin was an immigrant from France and the Superior General of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. Sorin also founded Notre Dame University in Indiana before coming to Texas. The school’s motto is “Take On Your World,” and it retains its affiliation with the Congregation of the Holy Cross. Today, the school is home to approximately 4,3000 students pursuing both undergraduate and graduate degrees. The university’s student body is known for its commitment to performing community service — with more than 70,000 hours tallied annually— and for producing a high number of Fulbright scholars. The school also has a satellite campus in Angers, France.
