Parking in the sign’s location, Griffith Park, is extremely limited. Take advantage of having a personal driver to drop off your group, park elsewhere, then return at an agreed upon time. When traveling in Los Angeles, it’s best to rent a coach bus for the available air conditioning. This is especially true in the LA summer. Coach bus rentals can also include wifi, audio-visual equipment, and more comfortable seats—everything you need for a trip in the LA heat.
Griffith Park, the home of the Hollywood sign, is one of the largest urban parks in America. The Hollywood sign might be its most obvious landmark, but there are many more attractions to take in. Follow a trail to enjoy the wildlife. If you’re quiet and careful, you might catch a glimpse of a coyote, opossum, or mountain lion. Visit the Autry Museum of the American West, the LA Zoo, the Greek Theatre, or play a round of golf in one of the park’s three courses. Of course, no trip to the park would be complete without an encounter with the stars at the Griffith Observatory (also a prime vantage point to view the Hollywood sign).
Did you know that the Hollywood sign once read “Hollywoodland?” In 1947, the H had toppled over and in order to secure funding for its restoration, a deal was made with the Recreations and Parks Commision to restore the H in exchange for the sacrifice of LAND. It now stands in full glory, modernized and catchier than ever. (Come on! Hollywoodland?) When the sign was first built in 1923, it was supposed to be a billboard for a real estate development. Its builders had no idea that it would become one of the world’s most sought-after selfie locations. But, few selfie-seekers are aware that it’s illegal to get close to the sign. There are, however, several hiking trails that will get you close enough for that epic photo op. Many hikes begin at Griffith Observatory or the Greek Theater. Have your Los Angeles charter bus rental drop you off and park elsewhere.
